Alleyway clearance for back alleys, ginnels and shared passages

The alley behind a row of terraces belongs to everyone and no one. A few bags get left out, a mattress appears, somebody's old fence panels follow, and before long the bins cannot be wheeled through. Our alleyway clearance service empties the passage from end to end. We work for groups of neighbours, single households, landlords and letting agents.

Most alleys are too narrow for a van, and many have bollards or a gate at each end. So the work is done on foot. The van parks at the nearest street end and everything is carried out to it. That takes longer than loading from a driveway, which is why a photo showing the length of the alley helps us quote properly. If the waste was brought in and dumped by outsiders, our fly tipping clearance page explains what to do first.

What we find is usually a mix of household rubbish and garden growth. Split bin bags, broken furniture and old carpet sit under brambles that have come over the yard walls. We take the rubbish and can cut back the overgrowth too, which is the same work as a garden clearance. If the real problem is bins that fill faster than they are emptied, a private bin collection may be the better fix.

Because an alley is shared, the cost is often shared as well. Guide prices go by load size, so one quote can be divided between the houses that back onto the passage. Our guide to how much rubbish removal costs explains how load sizes are measured. Ownership of back alleys varies and is not always obvious, so it is also worth reading what to do about fly tipping on private land.

How our alleyway clearance works

  1. Photograph both ends

Take a photo from each end of the alley and message them on WhatsApp. Tell us if there is a gate and who holds the key.

  2. One price for everyone

You get a clear price before any loading. If neighbours are sharing the cost, you have one figure to divide.

  3. Carried out on foot

The van parks at the street end. The team starts at the far end and works back, carrying everything out by hand.

  4. Swept and locked

We sweep the alley through and lock the gate behind us if there is one. Then the load is taken away for sorting.

Why neighbours book us for alleyway clearance

No vehicle access needed

Narrow, cobbled or bollarded alleys are fine. Everything is carried to wherever the van can park.

Simple to share

A single quote and a single invoice make it easy for a street, a landlord or an agent to split the bill between properties.

Cleared right through

We take the small stuff as well as the big items, so the alley no longer looks like a place where dumping is accepted.

Carrier licence and cover

Upper tier waste carrier CBDU526130, a waste transfer note for the load and public liability cover up to £5 million.

Gates, keys and shared responsibility in back alleys

Many alleys behind terraced streets are gated, with keys held by the residents. We need someone to let the team in and, ideally, the gate at the other end opened too, so the carry is shorter. Tell us about low washing lines, parked bins and any yard doors that open outwards into the passage. Small details like these change how long the job takes.

It helps to speak to the neighbours before you book. Ask each household to pull back anything they want to keep, such as plant pots, bikes and their own bins, so nothing is taken by mistake. Once the alley is empty, keeping it that way is easier if everyday rubbish has somewhere to go. Regular bagged waste can be collected through our domestic waste service.

Alleyway clearance FAQs

Who is responsible for clearing a back alley?

It depends on who owns it, and that varies. Some alleys are adopted by the council, while many are private and shared by the houses that back onto them. If you are not sure, your council can usually tell you whether an alley is adopted. Where it is private, clearing it normally falls to the owners.

Can you clear an alley that a van cannot get down?

Yes. That is the normal situation. The van parks at the nearest street end and the team carries everything out by hand. Let us know how long the alley is and where the waste sits, because a long carry adds time.

Can several neighbours share the cost of an alleyway clearance?

Yes. We give one price for the whole alley, based on load size, and one invoice. How you divide it between households is up to you. Guide prices start at £155, and the price guide on this page shows what larger loads cost.

Do you cut back overgrown plants as well as taking rubbish?

Yes. Brambles, ivy and self-seeded shrubs coming over yard walls can be cut back and taken away with the rubbish on the same visit. Mention it when you send your photos so the quote covers the green waste as well.

Does someone need to be there on the day?

Only to open the gate if the alley is kept locked. Once the team is in, you are free to leave them to it. If a neighbour holds the key, arrange for the gate to be opened for us. The price is agreed with you before any loading starts.

Do you clear shared areas at flats as well as alleys?

Yes, as separate services. Rubbish in stairwells, corridors and car parks at blocks of flats is covered by our communal area clearance service. Dumped items and overflow around the bins are dealt with as a bin store clearance.
