Lifting old carpet, underlay and gripper rods
To lift a carpet yourself, start in a corner and pull it off the gripper with pliers. Cut it into strips you can carry comfortably, working from the back with a sharp knife, then roll each strip tightly and tie or tape it. Wear gloves and a dust mask, because years of grit sit underneath and old underlay breaks into dust. Keep the rolls indoors, as wet carpet is far heavier.
Underlay is often stapled or glued down. Staples pull out with pliers, and glued patches may need scraping. Gripper rods are nailed around the edge of the room. Many fitters reuse them if they are sound, so ask yours before having them taken up. Everything we collect goes to licensed facilities for sorting.
