Damp, old tins and other things found in cellars
Cellars are where half-used tins and bottles end up. Paint, solvents, garden chemicals, gas bottles and old oil are common finds, and they should not be mixed in with general waste. Leave them where they are and send us a photo, and we will tell you what can be done with them. If you suspect asbestos, such as old boarding or pipe lagging, do not disturb it. That needs a specialist contractor.
Before we arrive, check the light works or tell us if it does not, and clear the hallway at the top of the steps so there is a straight run to the door. If the cellar has ever flooded, mention it, because waterlogged items are heavier than they look. Cellars often hold things stored after a death in the family. Our probate clearance page covers clearing a whole property in that situation.
