Getting a fridge freezer ready for collection

Empty the fridge and freezer the day before if you can. Switch it off at the wall, prop the doors open and put towels down to catch the meltwater. A defrosted unit is lighter and does not drip through the house on the way out. If it has been standing switched off with food still inside, tell us when you ask for a quote so the team knows what to expect.

Models with a water dispenser or ice maker are plumbed in, so the supply needs turning off and the pipe disconnecting before we arrive. Measure the narrowest doorway on the route out as well. With a wide unit, the appliance doors sometimes have to come off to get it through. After collection the unit goes to a licensed facility, where the gases are removed and the metals and plastics are separated for recycling.

Do I need to defrost my fridge freezer before collection?

It helps. Unplug it the day before, empty it and leave the doors open with towels underneath. If there is no time, tell us when you ask for a quote. A frozen unit is heavier and drips as it is moved, so the team needs to plan for that.

Can a fridge freezer go in a skip or out with the bins?

Not as ordinary rubbish. Fridges and freezers contain refrigerant gases and count as waste electricals, so they must go to a facility that can treat them. That is why they are collected and handled separately. We take yours to a licensed facility and give you a waste transfer note for your records.

Will you take a fridge freezer with food still in it?

Empty it first if you can. Food adds weight, and a unit that has been switched off while full is unpleasant to move. If you are dealing with an empty property and cannot face it, send a photo, explain the situation and we will tell you what we can do.

How do you get an American-style fridge freezer out of the house?

We look at the route first. Wide units are usually wheeled out, sometimes with the appliance doors taken off, and occasionally an internal door of the house has to be lifted off its hinges. Give us the width of the fridge and of your narrowest doorway when you ask for a quote.
