Before a probate clearance: what to check first
There is no need to rush the first part. Before any clearance, go through drawers, coat pockets, tins, the backs of wardrobes and the loft for documents, keys, jewellery, cash and photographs. Put paperwork such as bank statements, pension letters and insurance policies in one box and take it with you. If anything needs valuing, arrange that and have those pieces collected before the clearance date.
Make sure the person booking is entitled to have the contents removed. That is a matter for the executor or administrator and any solicitor involved, and we cannot advise on it. On the practical side, tell us if the property is a house, flat or bungalow, where the van can park and if there is a date the keys must be returned. A cellar full of stored items can be quoted too, as a cellar clearance.
