Who collects waste and old furniture from schools and colleges

Rubbish Removals Ltd collects waste and unwanted furniture from schools and colleges. If you are a site manager, caretaker or business manager with more to get rid of than the regular bins will take, send us a photo and we will quote. The team collects from classrooms, stores and grounds and does all the carrying and loading. Jobs are one-offs, so there is no contract to sign.

Most school clear-outs follow a change of some kind. Classrooms are refitted and the old desks, chairs and cupboards have nowhere to go, which is a furniture removal job. A staff room is reorganised and the filing cabinets go as well. Old projectors, monitors and interactive screens pile up in a store. They are waste electricals and should be recycled separately, as our TV disposal page explains.

Then there is everything that gathers over the years. Deliveries of books, furniture and equipment leave stacks of boxes, which a cardboard collection deals with. Design and technology rooms, drama departments and site sheds build up offcuts, old staging, broken benches and pallets, all of which can go as wood waste clearance. PE stores fill with split mats and worn-out equipment. One visit can take several of these at once.

Like any organisation that produces waste, a school or college has a duty of care to pass it only to a licensed carrier, and should keep the waste transfer notes. We hold upper tier waste carrier licence CBDU526130, and every job comes with a note and an invoice for your records. Our guide to the commercial waste duty of care explains the duty in plain terms.

How a school or college collection works

  1. Photograph what is going

Photograph the items where they are, or together if you have already gathered them, and send to 07935 554 253.

  2. Explain your site rules

Let us know how visitors sign in, where a van can go and which times of day to avoid.

  3. Agree price and time

We confirm a clear price and aim for a slot that suits the site, such as after the school day or in the holidays.

  4. Loaded and taken away

The team carries everything out, loads the van and tidies up. You get an invoice and a waste transfer note.

Why use us to clear a school or college site

Timed around the school day

Give us the times that work, after hours or in the holidays for example, and we fit the collection around them wherever possible.

Your staff stay hands-off

The team lifts, carries and loads from wherever the items are, so your site staff are not hauling desks down stairs.

Sorted for recycling

What we take goes to licensed facilities to be sorted, and around 90% of everything we collect is recycled.

Licensed and insured

Upper tier waste carrier, licence CBDU526130. Public liability cover up to £5 million while we are on your site.

Site rules, timing and what to check before a school clear-out

Every school and college has its own rules for visitors and contractors, and we do not assume what yours are. Set them out when you ask for the quote: how people sign in, where vehicles can and cannot go, who the team reports to and which times are off limits. We will plan the visit around them wherever possible. If your site requires something of contractors that is not mentioned on this page, ask us before you book.

Before collection day, empty the furniture. Paper left in cupboards and drawers goes for recycling with the rest of the load, so take out pupil records, exam papers and anything else the school needs to keep or deal with itself. Data on computers and tablets stays your responsibility, so remove or wipe the drives. For old science stock, paint or cleaning chemicals, ask us first. Our guide on what happens to rubbish after collection explains the sorting.

Questions schools and colleges ask about rubbish removal

Can you collect outside lesson times or in the holidays?

Tell us when suits your site and we will arrange the collection for then wherever possible. After the end of the school day or during a holiday is often easiest, because corridors and car parks are quiet. Give as much notice as you can if you want a particular holiday week.

What do you need to know about our visitor and safeguarding rules?

Everything a contractor has to follow on your site. That includes how to sign in, whether the team must be accompanied, which areas are out of bounds and when pupils are moving around. We do not make assumptions about your procedures. Tell us the rules when you ask for a quote, and ask us about anything specific you require.

Do you take old computers, projectors and interactive whiteboards?

Yes. They are waste electricals and are kept apart from furniture and general waste so they can be recycled separately. Remove or wipe any drives before collection, because the data on them remains the school's responsibility. Check as well that screens and copiers are not leased before you list them.

Do we have to bring everything to one place first?

No. The team collects from wherever the items are, including upstairs classrooms, stores and sheds, and takes apart large cupboards or benches where needed. If you would rather gather everything in a hall or one room to shorten the visit, that works too. Just tell us which you plan to do.

What paperwork does the school receive?

A waste transfer note and an invoice after every collection. The note records what was collected and that it was passed to a licensed carrier, and it should be kept on file. You can check our licence, CBDU526130, on the Environment Agency public register.

Can you clear a whole department or block before building work?

Yes. Send photos of each room and a rough list, and tell us the date the contractors start. Furniture, shelving, boards and stored clutter can all go in the same job. For admin areas, our office clearance page describes how desks and cabinets are taken out. A large job can be more than one load.
