What happens to plastic waste after we collect it
Plastics are sorted by type because each is reprocessed differently. Clean film, such as pallet wrap and polythene, can be baled and recycled into new film or bags. Rigid plastics like crates, pipes and tubs are usually granulated and remoulded into new products. Mixed, dirty or composite plastics are harder to deal with and may go for energy recovery instead. Keeping film free of food and soil, as far as you can, improves the chance that it is recycled.
If the plastic comes from a business, you have a duty of care to pass it only to a licensed carrier and to keep the waste transfer note. Our guide to commercial waste duty of care covers what the note should show. It also helps to describe the waste accurately when you book. Telling us that a stack of drums once held cooking oil, detergent or something else lets us plan where the load can go.
