Keeping cardboard dry, clean and ready to recycle
Cardboard is recycled by pulping the fibres, so its condition matters. Dry, clean boxes are the most useful. Card that has been soaked through, or is heavily soiled with grease or food, is much harder to recycle and may have to go with general waste instead. If you can, store boxes indoors or under cover until collection, and keep food waste and liquids away from the stack. Tape and labels can stay on.
If you run a business, cardboard is commercial waste even when it is clean and recyclable. It should not go in a household recycling bin, and you need a waste transfer note when a carrier takes it away. Our guide to commercial waste duty of care explains which records to keep and how to check the carrier you use. Households have a duty of care too, which is to hand waste only to a licensed carrier.
