Upholstered seating is treated differently from other furniture. The foam, fabric and linings may contain persistent organic pollutants, chemicals that were widely used as flame retardants. Waste sofas and armchairs therefore cannot be mixed in with general waste or sent to landfill. They are kept separate and go for incineration, which destroys the chemicals. The same applies to armchairs, recliners and padded footstools.

That is why sofa disposal is not as simple as it once was, and why it matters who takes yours. My sofa will not fit through the door. What happens?
